Turkish PM: Israeli attacks on Gaza are ‘state terror’
http://bit.ly/xGuHYi
By Madison Ruppert

Editor of End the Lie

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made some quite heated statements in condemnation of the most recent Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in a speech Tuesday, calling the attacks a “massacre.”

A cease fire between Gaza militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) went into effect Tuesday but there have been reports of rocket attacks despite this agreement.

Thus far, according to Israeli news outlet Haaretz, almost 200 rockets have hit Israeli territory since the most recent outbreak of violence began on Friday.

The Israeli Air Force has conducted some 37 airstrikes on targets in the Gaza Strip, 19 of which supposedly targeted rocket launchers while 18 allegedly targeted weapons warehouses.

These attacks have resulted in 26 Palestinian deaths, 22 of which were allegedly militants while four were civilians who had no hand in the rocket fire.

In a speech to the Turkish parliament, Erdogan called on Israel to “stop the brutal attack against Palestinians and stop the massacre and bloodshed.”

He also called the Israeli airstrikes on Palestinians “state terror,” adding that the Turkish people have an obligation to “remember that Gazans are our brothers, and will always remain so.”

Erdogan has made some similarly strong comments in regards to the Israeli actions in the past, even going as far as to say that any further flotillas which intend to break through the Gaza blockade would be accompanied by Turkish vessels after the massacre on the Mavi Marmara, in addition to claims that Turkey was going to seek legal retribution for the murders.

Even considering his fiery words, Erdogan tends to fail to actually follow through, and I honestly doubt that he will take any action against the Israeli attacks.

During the speech Erdogan also took the opportunity to address Syria, saying that “the window of opportunity was closing following the massacres taking place daily in the country,” while also saying that Turkey “was making every possible effort to prevent further escalation in Syria.”

It is unclear if he is referring to the possibility of foreign military intervention or the vicious violence currently occurring between the armed Syrian opposition and Syrian government forces. Turkey’s (alleged) involvement with the Syrian opposition makes me think this is a somewhat disingenuous statement.

Interestingly, Erdogan’s heated rhetoric came in the wake of Israel’s Counter Terrorism Bureau issuing a warning to Israelis against traveling to Turkey.

The Israeli agency claimed that they had information regarding the intent of terrorist organizations to carry out attacks on targets frequented by Israelis and Jews in Turkey in the near future, according to The Washington Post.

There have been previous claims of planned terrorist attacks in Turkey – which were supposedly going to strike targets linked to the United States – but thankfully those failed to materialize, and I suspect that will be the case with these recent warnings as well.

Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor, sent a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday calling for the Security Council to condemn the rocket attacks at the hands of Gaza militants.

If the Security Council were to adopt such a resolution, I would hope that they would also condemn the Israeli collective punishment of Palestinians which is a clear violation of international law.

Prosor complained of what he believed to be a lack of response from the United Nations regarding the most recent violence, saying that the United Nations “Security Council has uttered zero words of condemnation of these attacks.”

“There is something wrong with this equation,” Prosor claimed, adding that it was “time for the Security Council to speak with one voice against the terrorism that continues to flow from Gaza.”

I agree that terrorism should be opposed by all means, but we must also recognize the terrorism that continues to flow out of Israel as well.

Not long ago anonymous U.S. officials confirmed that Israel was indeed responsible for training and funding terrorists and their operations in Iran.

If the Security Council is going to condemn killers in Gaza, I would hope that they would evenhandedly condemn the terrorists and murderers in Israel as well.

But of course Israeli officials believe they are exceptional and the rules don’t apply to them, so I’m sure such a resolution that took a fair approach would be condemned as anti-Semitic or something similarly nonsensical.

This latest wave of attacks led Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to say that the Palestinians would no longer be allowed to have a territorially contiguous state, claiming that the people of Palestine “have condemned themselves to a separation that looks like it will continue for generations," according to the Jerusalem Post.

This is quite tragic, and indicates the collective punishment I mentioned previously, as Lieberman is holding the entirety of the Palestinian people responsible for the actions of a handful of militants.

The Israeli government seems to be wiping away any and all chance of a so-called “safe passage” from Gaza and even raising the prospect of another Operation Cast Lead-like onslaught.

Operation Cast Lead Redux?
http://bit.ly/A9KiO0
By Madison Ruppert

Editor of End the Lie

The violence in Israel and Palestine continues today with the Palestinian death toll around 26, including four civilians, with some rocket attacks occurring even after the cease fire was brokered by Egypt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took his typically aggressive stance recently in openly raising the prospect of a full-scale ground invasion of Palestinian territories.

The Israeli military reportedly has said that they are “ready” to carry out such an operation, which would be the first such operation since 2009’s brutal Operation Cast Lead (characterized by Amnesty International as "22 days of death and destruction"), which killed an estimated 1,400 people and resulted in the total decimation of countless dwellings and businesses.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has leveraged the most recent attacks as justification for increasing isolation and collective punishment of Palestinians.

He claims that Palestinians will no longer be able to have a territorially contiguous state, saying that they “have condemned themselves to a separation that looks like it will continue for generations.”

Netanyahu has been exploiting this tragic violence as much as possible, making some (arguably typically) unbelievably nonsensical statements.

Netanyahu’s statements – covered yesterday by the Jerusalem Post – were made to the Likud party’s Knesset contingent.

The comments were clearly quite calculated, as Netanyahu is well aware that much of the world is watching this situation closely after witnessing the atrocities of Cast Lead.

“The IDF is continuing to strongly and decisively attack the terrorists in the Gaza strip,” he said. “The IDF is ready to expand its operations and continue them as necessary.”

This makes it clear that despite the case fire, which has reportedly already been broken by militants, is by no means binding and the Israeli military is ready and willing to carry out another bloody crusade in Palestine.

Defense officials and some Israeli politicians had previously threatened to expand the attacks on Gaza which began on Friday after the murder of the head of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), Zuhair Qaisi.

However, this is the first instance of Netanyahu raising the prospect in a public setting.

“We will strike at whoever intends to harm our citizens,” he said, claiming that the “winning combination” in this battle was “crushing offensive capabilities” and “important defensive measures.”

By “crushing offensive capabilities” Netanyahu was referring to the Israeli military ability to murder alleged militants “wherever they are,” of course while killing some civilians in the process.

“Important defense measures” is a reference to the anti-rocket system known as the Iron Dome and what Netanyahu called “the resistance of the citizens in the South” who the Jerusalem Post say “are living under a constant missile threat,” even though that threat does not, by any metric, constantly materialize.

Netanyahu nonsensically leveraged this violence as justification for military action against Iran.

He met with Italian Defense Minister Giampaolo Di Paola and claimed that the current rocket attacks “hammered home the dangers that would exist were Iran to gain nuclear capability, since the organizations firing the rockets from Gaza were trained and funded by Iran,” according to the Jerusalem Post.

The Israeli government is claiming that there is not only a danger of nuclear material falling into the hands of terrorists if Iran gains nuclear capabilities (which they are not currently working towards according to U.S. intelligence agencies and U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta) but also the possibility that organizations supposedly linked to Iran would be encouraged to attack Israel.

Similarly, Lieberman has been exploiting this tragic violence to further isolate Palestinians, saying that this rocket fire means that they have forfeited all hopes for a territorial link, or “safe passage,” between Gaza and the West Bank.

“As long as Hamas is in control of the Gaza Strip, there is no chance that we will agree to a safe passage, or unsafe passage, or elevated passage, or underground passage or any passage whatsoever,” Lieberman said. “The Palestinians have condemned themselves to a separation right now that looks like it will continue for generations.”

This is yet another instance of Israel – which constantly bills claims the title of “the only democracy in the Middle East” – rejecting democracy when it does not serve their interests.

The “safe passage” concept dates all the way back to the Gaza-Jericho Agreement of 1994 along with the Taba negotiations of 2001, during which one of the only things that both sides could agree on was the passage from north Gaza to the Hebron region.

Lieberman claims that terrorists and weaponry to be used on Israel would be transported to Judea and Samaria through any passage from Gaza to the West Bank.

This is a laughable assertion given that any such passage would likely be heavily guarded by Israeli military with heavily fortified checkpoints making any such smuggling operation near impossible.

Lieberman, like Netanyahu, exploited the current violence as an excuse to demonize Iran.

He claimed – while of course providing no evidence or justification whatsoever – that Iran is responsible for today’s terror attacks in Israel, as they were supposedly responsible for the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires and the 1994 bombing of the Jewish center there as well, both of which were blamed on Hezbollah.

Lieberman also claimed that Iran provided the “oxygen” for every single terrorist organization in Gaza that is carrying out violent acts. He said that without that “oxygen” provided by Iran, the ability for terrorists to survive would be in question.

Following this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion, it appears that Lieberman is calling for Iran to be wiped out completely based on the dubious claims of Israeli politicians in order to starve terrorist organization in Gaza of their “oxygen.”

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that he was “gravely concerned” about the latest violence at a Security Council meeting addressing changes in the Middle East region.

He said that once again civilians were paying a high price, calling the rocket attacks “unacceptable,” adding that they “must top immediately.” He also called on Israel to show “maximum restraint” which they have not demonstrated.

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke out against the Israeli air strikes, calling them “state terror” and a “massacre.”

The Egyptian state news agency MENA reported on Monday that the Egyptian parliament called for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador in Cairo, in addition to recalling the Egyptian envoy to Israel.

The text prepared by the Arab affairs committee of the People’s Assembly, which calls for “the expulsion from Egypt of the Israeli ambassador and the recall of Egypt’s envoy from Tel Aviv” was unanimously approved by Egyptian members of parliament.

Ahram Online points out that this measure is almost entirely symbolic because the ruling military council is the only body actually capable of making such decisions and thus is unlikely to hurt Egyptian-Israeli relations which have been bound by a peace treaty since 1979.

It is quite true that it is purely ceremonial, as Egypt is currently governed by a military dictatorship and thus the MPs have little to no real power.

However, the unanimous adoption of the text shows a popular Egyptian opposition to Israeli activities in Gaza, as the text even calls for a halt to gas exports to Israel.

The text also declares that “Egypt will never be the friend, partner or ally of the Zionist entity which we consider as the first enemy of Egypt and the Arab nation,” as well as calling for the revision of “all [of the Egyptian government’s] relations and agreements with that enemy.”

It remains to be seen if the cease fire brokered through Egypt wil
Our choice: apathetic decay, or the decay of apathy

Director of DARPA departs Pentagon for Google, further reinforcing government ties
http://bit.ly/w7UFhs
By Madison Ruppert Editor of End the Lie Regina Dugan, the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), will be leaving the Pentagon’s mad scientist research agency for the corporate Big Brother known as Google . Dugan has only been at DARPA for less than three years and was “offered and accepted [a] senior executive position” with Google, according to Eric Mazzacone, a spokesperson with DARPA. Mazzacone added that Dugan felt she could not refuse such an offer with an “innovative company” like Google, which also has a close relationship with the American intelligence community . Dugan has been a relatively popular director because of her emphasis on cybersecurity matters and next-generation manufacturing, which has garnered significant support from the Obama administration, which allowed DARPA to dodge the bullet of budget cuts that have hit the Pentagon as of late, according to Danger Room . Dugan also is lauded by Danger Room for her push into “crowdsourcing” and her increasing outreach to the hacker community, which has resulted in some quite astounding technology like the miniature, inexpensive, and easily concealed spy computer known as the F-BOMB . During Dugan’s tenure she also has diverted some of the quite substantial research funds devoted to long-term projects (some of which are a long way off from being used in the field) to more short-term operational projects. “There is a time and a place for daydreaming. But it is not at Darpa ,” she told a congressional panel in March of 2011. “Darpa is not the place of dreamlike musings or fantasies, not a place for self-indulging in wishes and hopes. Darpa is a place of doing.” While this might seem like a common sense statement coming from any other agency, when it is coming out of the mouth of the director of DARPA, which is behind such technologies as the militarized hallucination technology known as “battlefield illusions” (among many other strange and unbelievable technologies ) it is remarkable indeed. Dugan’s history at DARPA is not all quite as glowing as it may seem, especially given her history with RedXDefense , a bomb detection company which she co-founded and still holds partially owns. Currently, the Pentagon’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) is investigating contracts worth hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars that were awarded to RedXDefense by DARPA under Dugan’s leadership. This shouldn’t be all that surprising to my readers, given that this is standard operating procedure for the war profiteers with blatant conflicts of interest like Dugan and Michael Chertoff . A military memorandum revealed that a separate audit is looking into some of the 2,000 other contracts DARPA signed under Dugan in an attempt to “determine the adequacy of Darpa’s selection, award, and administration of contracts and grants.” No results of the investigations have been released to the public as of yet and according to Mazzacone, the inquiries had “no impact” on Dugan’s decision to leave DARPA. According to Mazzacone, “the only reason” that she decided to depart the Pentagon was the attractive prospect of working at Google. “Dr. Dugan’s departure is not related to an OIG investigation,” Lt. Col. Melinda Morgan, a spokesperson for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, claimed in a statement. “The OIG conducts regular audits of Defense agency contracts and ethics programs; as a Defense agency, this includes Darpa.” “In the spring, questions were raised over whether it was appropriate for Darpa to have funded a proposal submitted by RedXDefense, particularly in light of the Director’s continuing interest in this closely held small business,” Morgan added. “In response, the Department reviewed the processes in place at Darpa to ensure that those processes would ensure integrity and public confidence.” Mazzacone said that Dugan is expected to leave DARPA for the internet behemoth “sometime in the next few weeks” at which time deputy director Kaigham Gabriel will take over as acting chief. “Regina Dugan’s leadership at Darpa has been extraordinary and she will be missed throughout the Department,” Frank Kendall, Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, says in a statement. “We are all very grateful for the many contributions she has made in advancing the technologies that our war fighters depend on. She leaves for an exciting new opportunity and we wish her every success,” Kendall added. The biggest question is: what will Dugan be bringing to the table at Google? It is certain that she will bring her experience at the highly secretive research agency to Google, but the major unknown is how exactly his will take shape. While Google already has established connections with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA) (which refuses to disclose the true nature of their relationship with Google ) and other government agencies, Dugan’s move will just serve to reinforce these links. What do you think Dugan will be doing at Google? I’d love to hear from you and take a look at your own original writings if you would like to see them published. Florida man caught in legal limbo for filming police
http://bit.ly/wKXeXZ
By Madison Ruppert Editor of End the Lie [caption id="attachment_41377" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Member of North Port Police Department's Traffic & Neighborhood Stabilization Unit (TNS) (Image credit: City of North Port, Florida)"] [/caption] Over a month ago, Steve Horrigan, a Florida resident, was arrested on charges of felony wiretapping for the high crime of recording video of police in public with his cell phone. The Sarasota County, Florida State Attorney’s Office has yet to even formally file charges against Horrigan, and the North Port Police Department has not yet returned his cell phone. Unfortunately, Horrigan’s case is not some isolated anomaly, but instead part of a much larger war on citizens who attempt to hold police accountable for their activities and do so in a wholly legal manner . The state of Horrigan’s case has him in legal limbo wherein he cannot move forward with his lawsuit and the state attorney has even more time before they have to file charges. On top of the felony wiretapping, Horrigan is facing a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest without violence, something which Carlos Miller characterizes as “the usual tack-on charge in Florida when you’ve pissed off the cops.” Under state law in Florida, an individual who was arrested for a misdemeanor must be tried within 90 days of the arrest, while a felony arrest gives a period of 175 days. Horrigan was arrested on January 25 of this year, so the state attorney has more time to make him squirm before they have to bring him to trial. Thankfully, Horrigan’s case is getting some attention, at least amongst the local media like the Sarasota Herald-Tribune . Recently they ran an in-depth piece not only about Horrigan’s case but the nationwide struggle between citizens who want to hold police accountable and those individuals who refuse to allow citizens to exercise this right. Unfortunately, the author of the piece failed to point out the fact that there is absolutely no legal basis on which an officer can arrest an individual for filming them in public carrying out their public duties where they have no reasonable expectation of privacy. Indeed, Miller points to four cases he has covered (which you can read about here , here , here and here ) where residents of Florida had been arrested for recording police on video in public, all of which ended up being dismissed. There is also the precedent set in Illinois where a judge declared their law – which is quite similar to the Florida law – unconstitutional . North Port Police Captain Robert Estrada defended the actions of law enforcement, claiming that Horrigan crossed the line when he recorded what was supposedly a confidential conversation between officers, after having been ordered to stop. However, Estrada admits that he has not actually seen Horrigan’s video, and he also admits that the police were operating in a public place where there is no expectation of privacy. Estrada employs some laughably fallacious logic in stating, “If the officers there were yelling to each other loud enough for everyone to hear, that would obviously not constitute a personal conversation,” but since police did not consent to being recorded and they had to divert their attention from the traffic stop to deal with Horrigan, they arrested him. “It is a gray area, I don’t know,” Estrada admitted. “It’s up to the courts to decide.” Horrigan, on the other hand, agrees with Florida prosecutors (and the actual law ) in saying that the law is actually black and white, without the massive gray area which Estrada would prefer to exploit. It is completely nonsensical for Estrada to claim he knew that the conversation was confidential, or that he is at all qualified to speak on the details of the case, while also claiming that he has never actually seen the video in question. Horrigan thinks the reasons behind his arrest are quite different than the supposed eavesdropping of a confidential conversation. “The two guys who they stopped in the car that I was recording are fighting their charges, even though they are pretty minor. Both are 2nd degree misdemeanors, so I'll be going to their hearings to see what's up with that,” Horrigan writes in an email. “It's pretty egregious that the cops arrested both of these guys even though there were two pre-toddlers in the back seat. Those poor kids were probably terrified.” “They had to wait for a family member to get there to take the kids home, otherwise they would have called the children services. I was in handcuffs in the police car before they arrested the two brothers so I couldn't get that recorded. That is probably why they nicked me, so that I wouldn't have been able to record the screaming kids in the back seat after arresting Dad for driving on a restricted license. These cops have no shame at all,” he concluded. I would not be at all surprised if prosecutors waited up until the last possible moment, holding on to his cell phone the entire time, just to never file charges and hand over his phone with no explanation whatsoever. On top of causing considerable hardship and stress for Horrigan, this would make it much harder, if not impossible, for him to file a lawsuit since they both returned his phone and failed to actually file charges. This is yet another instance of calculated police harassment of citizens who exercise their right to record police in public and hold them accountable for their activities. I thought that the Illinois decision would help discourage this kind of behavior but apparently such decisions will have to be made on a state-by-state basis before police and prosecutors start paying attention. End the Lie Radio with Madison Ruppert - Episode 6

I'm a little delayed in getting this one up but here it is. This was a difficult show to do since I wasn't prepared and didn't have any materials or references whatsoever in front of me. I did this show out of my car from my cell phone so please excuse the relatively poor sound quality. That being said, I think it was still a great show going over a wide range of geopolitical issues as well as problems facing the United States.
American imperialism: an appeal to wealthy Americans to correct historical injustices
http://bit.ly/wvpePp
By Adam Wadley Contributing writer for End the Lie [caption id="attachment_41346" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Ottoman Empire in the 16-17th century"] [/caption] I’m writing this article about American imperialism for people who don’t think America is an empire, and also for people who do recognize that it is an empire, and might enjoy a creative spin on how to approach the topic. First, I’d like to explain why I wrote this, which is not just to make people feel bad, and make me feel better for recognizing how guilty we are. I do not believe all evil in the world comes from America, or that America has not made the world better in many ways. That said, the wealth disparity both within America, and between America and the rest of the world, is totally unjustified and represents the efforts of the powerful to shift the terms of trade in their favor, and this is what I mean when I say imperialism. Now, normally when we start talking about American imperialism, we enter the conversation at one of two places: the Middle Eastern wars or the Spanish-American war. There is a point behind each of these that I’d like to address. Starting the conversation around Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, this conversation will quickly become very muddy. There are a lot of things that we don’t know about the situation in the Middle East, and so it is hard to categorically say what is and is not necessary. That said, I think that this warfare is a teachable moment about the history behind the historical conflict between people of the Middle East, lumped together as Muslims, and the people of Europe, lumped together as Christians. This extends all the way back to the conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the Ottoman Empire (see above), founded on a Caliphate. It even goes back farther, probably. Most liberal historians start the critique of American Imperialism around the time of the Spanish-American war, when America gained control over Cuba (which it soon officially “released”) and the Philippines (which it did not “release” for quite a while). The reason that I emphatically disagree with this historical assertion is not because I do not find these acts to be imperialistic. They are. Instead, I see no reason not to brand the subjugation of the entire middle band of North America AS “Imperialism.” This is one of my central points, and it is hard to overstate the importance of it: it is easy to take America for granted, but it is an extremely large country. Let us remember that white people come from Europe. Great Britain wound up creating four large overseas territories dominated by whites: The United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Each of these places was once inhabited by a totally different group of people, whose culture and livelihoods were destroyed. We can agree the America was part of the British Empire prior to its independence, but many may not understand why I believe the subjugation of the American continent to be a matter of Empire. The power of The United States can be summed up as follows: European technology and knowledge combined with large amounts of land, natural resources, and relatively little internal strife. The US is an historically unique country, because it is the largest and most developed empire to come into existence after the industrial revolution. Remember that Europe suffered two major destructive episodes with 20 th Century technology, while America has not had to fight on its own continental territory since its Civil War, which ended in 1865. America’s population is 300 million and its area is 3.79 million square miles. Is there any surprise that it took over the mantle of most powerful empire from Britain, which currently has only 130,395 square miles and 62 million people to work with? We can easily see the advantages over Europe: one language and one government (after the Civil War, the states cannot really be said to be sovereign), with no history of disputed borders among whites. Conquering the area of the continental US, holding it, and developing it was quite an accomplishment, and is deserving of the title of “imperialism.” We do not call the United States an Empire because it is formally a republic, but remember that those whose consent is required for its government are white, and that the land’s original inhabitants were brown. The states do not dispute their borders, and very few serious politicians believe the federal government to be illegitimate. That said, this harmony among whites hides the valid objections of “minority” populations: Native Americans, African-Americans, and Central/South-Americans. I will go through these objections very briefly in order to outline the main points. Native Americans were forced off their homelands by white settlers, and were taken advantage of through their signing treaties they could not read, subjection to alcohol to which they had no tolerance, the breaking of treaties that were enacted, and smallpox infected blankets. The indigenous people were often told that if they went a bit further west, America would leave them alone, but obviously this never happened. Next, it is important to remember how crucial slave labor was to the construction of the American nation, and how cruel the “all men are created equal” line in the Declaration of Independence is. Even after slavery was ended, African populations in America were brutally suppressed from voicing their political opinions or interfering with or participating in the government of the United States. To this day, most of the people punished under the criminal justice system are black. The key point here is that the laws as written can favor one party, making the point not that blacks break laws, but that the laws were written so that they would. A historical event most are unaware of is the 1846-1848 Mexican-American War. Many Mexicans cherish the slogan “we didn’t cross the border- the border crossed us!” because during this war, America claimed territory that belonged to Mexico; when Mexicans attacked U.S. soldiers in disputed territory, the war was started and used as an excuse to grab California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico away from Mexican control. It is crucial to critically examine the borders and laws of the United States as they stand, and not take them for granted, with the government duty-bound to protect them. How did it come to this in the first place, and was it just? It is clear that warfare specifically, and the use of force more generally, was very important in the formation of the United States. So often higher-ups pooh-pooh the notion of American militarism by pointing out that as a function of GDP , American military spending is not that high. Again, this takes for granted the current stature of America, which is in fact highly anomalous, and required great barbarity to attain. Still, it is very important that the U.S. has developed such a large economy, and I think that lets it engage in a lot of economic imperialism. I would argue that America mainly thrives by its economic imperialism. It has by far the world’s largest economy, which means that it engages in the most trade. On that note, let’s introduce the concept of hegemony: Hegemony refers to when one nation or social group subjugates the rest of society and the world in a kind of indirect imperial dominance. I believe that U.S. trade is hegemonic since it is much easier for other countries to go along with us, and thus get to trade with us, than resist, thus not being able to trade with us or our allies - this is what trade “sanctions,” or embargoes against specific nations, are all about. The proof of United States economic imperialism is in the status of the Dollar as the world’s reserve currency. It might be argued that the economic system of the world is necessarily hinged around the United States, as the globe’s most prosperous and stable economy. To this I would counter that it need not be so that other countries would feel compelled to buy so much of our debt. It is not a secret that the United States has enjoyed massive trade deficits since the 1970s; I say “enjoyed” because what “trade deficit” really means is that the value of the goods imported vastly exceeded the value of the goods exported, which reminds me of the practice of imperialism. The United States may dictate the terms of trade, and in its favor! Other nations must comply, and do so at a disadvantage. One key aspect of United States hypocrisy is the emphasis on “Free Trade.” If the US were really a Christian nation, it would have adopted the notion that one should correct one’s own faults b
Gold slow out of the gate this week over China concerns
http://bit.ly/A5Fkq0
By Jeremy Holcombe Contributing writer for Goldco Direct and End the Lie Gold was a bit slower coming out of the gate this week based on some concern coming out of China. The eurozone was, of course, still playing a part in gold being slow starting out this week, but after the good news coming out of that region last week things should start to ease up there. News hit the wire today that China reported a pretty high trade deficit in February. While import growth came in nicely at 39.6% y/y, export growth was no where near the same. China reported only about half of that amount, around 18.6% for their export. This number was the lowest reported number by China in a whopping 22 years of constant growth. That news led to gold dropping off to start the week off, so we will need to see how the yellow metal responds the rest of the week. According to a Reuter’s article, "Traders and analysts said the PBOC [People’s Bank of China] appears to be preparing the domestic and global markets for sharper fluctuations to eventually widen the yuan's daily trading band." Given that it happened on the same day that a large trade deficit was reported, I think they were simply sending the signal that China intends to keep its goods and services relatively cheap, by constraining the upside in the yuan. No matter how you look at it, the fact that China reported such low export numbers has to be a concern for many investors, as China is usually one of the leading exporters of materials in the world. Furthermore, it could indicate a contraction in the markets evidenced by a lower demand for imported goods from China, which usually sees steadily high demand. Most investors will see this news as they have seen most of the other news lately; as a small bump in the road. Gold has value at almost any point, and after almost any kind of news. While the price may dip some, the overall reach and outlook of gold remains strong. At the very least, it is a great commodity to invest in if you need to protect some of your money. Look for gold to have a quick rebound and come back up some this week. If it does not recover and perhaps even gain some value this week, then expect it to come next week. Either way, it won’t be long before the yellow metal rebounds, as that has proven to be true time and time again. All one has to do is look at the long term gold price graphs to see how this is on a steady upward trend with small aberrations both up and down which are ironed out in the long run. Don’t be afraid to continue to invest in the yellow metal, as it is still poised to have a nice 2012, and if many analysts are right, it might continue to make its way towards the $2,000 per ounce mark we’ve been hearing so much about. Our choice: apathetic decay, or the decay of apathy
http://bit.ly/wDp3JM
By Mike Cotugno Contributing writer for End the Lie Economic, political and social strife are ramping up at an exponential rate around the world as global production and development atrophies, promising a further proliferation of civil decay. Wars rage on as the ministry of truth propaganda machine whips up the Prozac-addicted populace into a xenophobic, jingoist frenzy to send more and more of their young men and women to fight and die for vague and specious ends. We are denied due process of law while the most vile wretches in society claim power over other men through the usurpation of the state's monopoly on law and force, over which they have profound sway and influence. Millions are losing their homes and jobs and depend on food stamps for sustenance while the already opulent and affluent pigs on Wall Street are somehow becoming more corpulent and voracious. The "revolving door," the term so nonchalantly coined by the mainstream corporate whore media for the seamless flux of professional titles from mega-bank CEO to senator, is a testament to the blasé attitude of high fructose corn syrup consuming automatons to the most blatant, brazen theft in the history of humanity. Many, if not all of the regulatory bodies have been thoroughly infiltrated and captured or had been initially created to only benefit the industries they were originally intended to regulate . A well know bank executive is on record saying while the true power brokers are screwing us royally through fraud and corruption, they are only "doing God's work;" an appropriately logical conclusion to reach as these sociopaths believe their right to plunder the whole of civilization is derived from the divine right of kings. Their rapaciousness for evermore intravenous monetary injections from the fiat kingpin at the Federal Reserve erodes the standard of living for all as we become serfs in a neo-feudal society; forever bound to reap the consequences of the elite's hedonistic indulgences, indebted by the debts of our masters. It doesn't matter though. I could go on ad nauseum about the CIA getting caught trafficking drugs and running child prostitution rings or the president giving himself the power to kill anyone indiscriminately without trial . It would not change anything or change the mind of anyone who was not already aware. This type of willful ignorance is certainly bliss, and ironically, these despots rely on that same ignorance of their crimes to further their agendas, and when they see that there are no consequences to their actions, they only become more audacious and dangerous. Apathy is the true mortal coil of my generation. But fate is bullshit. We were not destined to be in perpetual debt for our entire lives, living paycheck to paycheck. Why is it that our parents could come out of high school and be successful while we are expected to spend up to 8 years in the prime of our lives to get a piece of paper that we have to pay off for years, which still does not guarantee career security? Are we the first generation in America to accept a lower standard of living then our parents? No, first you have to realize you have been fleeced. Lied to, herded and sheered. You have to fully absorb the fact that the world is not a Disney movie and we don't get to be what we want to be and have a nice house and two cars and 2.5 kids. No, in fact, statistically speaking, it’s more likely that we will be on some type of government welfare and will have to use credit cards to finance our eating habits. The gap between the rich and the poor a generation ago was merely a crack in the sidewalk that could be easily stepped over compared to the gorge wealth discrepancies have fissured into today. Ours and our siblings' futures have been mortgaged off by tyrants to stay in office just a one more term, who in turn sell their vote to the highest bidder. Our obliviousness is what these mischievous bastards feed off of. The indifference to who shapes our futures and how they plan on executing their agendas gives psychopaths carte blanche to mold society as they wish. We have to snap out of it. We have to become enraged, aware, and vengeful. Just anything so we know we are still alive. Proclaim you will not allow some pedophiles to get together in round table discussions where they extrapolate our future in secret. Stand up for yourself and herald that you are human. Your life has value. You are not in a cog in a machine that you don't understand, you are a sentient body with free will teeming with potential. It is not my goal or even my responsibility to shake people out of their listlessness; my only ambition is to offer a choice, or rather, to show people that the choice was always there. The choice is to wake up or to stay asleep, become aware or consciously choose not to think. It is an arduous task to disseminate ideas to the masses that are contrary to the status quo without economic and political support, but it is not impossible. Ideas play a significant role in society and the power these criminals have over others is largely because of public sentiment and a complete lack of engagement. As Samuel Adams once said "it does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." A political and intellectual revolution is underway; choose carefully which side are you on. Yet another reason to leave: US soldier allegedly kills Afghan women and children
http://bit.ly/AweP5e
By Madison Ruppert Editor of End the Lie [caption id="attachment_41263" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="A villager points to a spot where a family was allegedly shot in their home by a U.S. serviceman in Panjwayi, Afghanistan. (Image credit: Mamoon Durrani, AFP/Getty Images)"] [/caption] If gas at four hundred dollars per gallon , the turning tide of Afghan public opinion and a decade of spending with no visible progress did not provide enough reasons to live Afghanistan, today we got another to add to the list. According to Afghan officials who visited the scene of the murders, some 16 people, nearly all of which were women and children, have been killed by a lone American soldier. The individual allegedly left the southern Afghanistan base on which he was deployed in the early hours of the morning, after which he conducted a cold, calculated house-to-house murder spree. NATO officials have confirmed that the killer is in military custody and had been responsible for an unspecified number of casualties during the rampage, which was around 3 AM Sunday morning. In response to the killings, the U.S. Embassy called for calm and expressed their deep condolences, while the Taliban called the killings an "act of genocide." This latest incident means a potentially irreparable setback in U.S.-Afghan relations, which are already strained due to the Koran burnings at an American military base north of Kabul and the ensuing violent protests. When the news of the Koran burnings at Bagram airfield surfaced, the latent anti-Western sentiment grew into full-scale riots which carried on for some time. U.S. officials insist that it was a mistake and offered their apologies, but some Afghan lawmakers and prominent clerics have brushed these apologies aside and continued their calls for the harsh punishment of those responsible. The latest killings took place in the village of Alkozai, in the Panjwayi district near Kandahar city. Anonymous U.S. military officials told the Los Angeles Times that they believed that the murderer suffered a mental breakdown at some point. NATO's official statement promised a thorough investigation by both U.S. and Afghan authorities and confirmed that there were casualties, without offering many other details. Lieutenant General Adrian Bradshaw, the acting commander of the forces in Afghanistan, expressed his "deep regret and sorrow at this appalling incident." "I cannot explain the motivation behind such callous acts, but they were in no way part of authorized ... military activity," Bradshaw added. I can't believe that Bradshaw could be so ignorant as to say that he cannot think of what motivated this individual. This individual's mindset is a product of war and the systematic dehumanization of the so-called "enemy" which these soldiers are conditioned to accept. All one has to do is look at the disturbingly high rates of suicide amongst soldiers who have seen combat to understand the deep and, for those who have not experienced it, unimaginable psychology trauma these soldiers endure. If we weren't still in Afghanistan, wasting money we don't have, putting Americans in the line of fire while encouraging anti-American sentiment and killing countless Afghans in the name of the "War on Terror" incidents like today's would never occur. Of course, Bradshaw and those like him would never recognize the fact that incidents like these could be eliminated entirely if we just packed up and went home, using the resources being diverted into the Middle East to help the many struggling Americans at home. Haji Agha Lalai Dastgeeri, a member of the official provincial delegation dispatched to the scene of the murders, said that the official count was 16 casualties. Nine of these were women, four were children and three were men, he said. "I saw the dead bodies and visited the victims' families," Dastgeeri said. Earlier in the day, reports of the number of dead varied considerably with the deputy head of the Kandahar provincial council, Haji Mohammad Ehsan, saying that 18 were killed. A spokesman for the Kandahar media center, Javed Faisal, said that "up to 15" individuals were murdered and several others had been wounded. While the Los Angeles Times claims, "The attacker's motive was unknown" I think it is quite clear that the trauma of war and the recent problems in U.S.-Afghan relations after the Koran burnings are likely responsible to some extent. The violent demonstrations lasted over a week across Afghanistan and left some 30 people dead, and six U.S. soldiers were killed. In one case, two Americans were killed by a worker at Afghanistan's Interior Ministry, which some say was a response to the Koran burnings, while a Marine writing for End the Lie alleges that it was actually a response to an investigation into the drug trade . Either way, if nothing else, it is becoming painfully clear that we need to get out of Afghanistan. We are only continuing to create potential terrorists by occupying their nation and incidents like today's rampage are likely to inflame the already strained tensions even more. I see absolutely no reason to continue our occupation. We must stop spending money we don't have, stop psychologically damaging both Americans and Afghans, stop the murders and stop our imperialistic crusade which has made no positive progress whatsoever. If anyone needed another reason, which I honestly think we did not, today's horrific events gave us just that. Former NYPD narcotics detective testifies that drug charges were fabricated to meet quotas, other detective found guilty
http://bit.ly/AFd8Z2
By Madison Ruppert Editor of End the Lie [caption id="attachment_26547" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Jason Arbeeny on the left (Credit: Robert Stolarik for The New York Times)"] [/caption] Testimony from former NYPD narcotics detective Stephen Anderson revealed that there is widespread fabrication of drug charges and false arrests amongst the Brooklyn south and Queens narcotics units. This is a dangerous result of the type of society that uses police not to keep the peace and protect law abiding citizens but instead to generate revenue at all costs. I must regretfully point out that these incidents of framing innocent people are just a grain of sand on the beach of police corruption that plagues New York. Furthermore, this is just a symptom of the government system which employs Mafia-like tactics to subjugate and oppress the people, especially those who they view as weak. It is also evident that the entire concept of the “war on drugs” encourages this type of behavior, as Justice Gustin Reichbach pointed out in saying , “Anything goes in the never-ending war on drugs […] and a refusal to go along with questionable practices raise the specter of blacklisting and isolation”. Thus far eight police officers have been arrested in the probe and Anderson’s testimony was given under a cooperation agreement with the prosecutor’s office. Jason Arbeeny, a 14-year veteran of the NYPD, was convicted of official misconduct, offering a false instrument for filing, and falsifying business records, all of which committed in 2007. Anderson did not know Arbeeny or work with him, making his testimony that much more damning and indicative of how widespread the practice of framing innocent people actually is. The disgusting practice of planting cocaine on innocent people, known colloquially as “flaking”, seems to be widespread and surely the eight officers are not the only ones, although that is pure speculation at this point. In 2008, Anderson planted cocaine on four individuals at a bar in Queens, allegedly in order to assist another police officer, Henry Tavarez. Anderson claimed that Tavarez “was worried about getting sent back [to patrol] and, you know, the supervisors getting on his case” at the corruption trial for former Brooklyn South narcotics detective Jason Arbeeny. “I had decided to give him [Tavarez] the drugs to help him out so that he could say he had a buy,” Anderson told the Brooklyn Supreme Court last week, according to the NY Daily News . “As a detective, you still have a number to reach while you are in the narcotics division,” he said, referring to the quotas so-called law enforcement, better classified as revenue generators, have to meet. The testimony of Anderson proves that the practice of falsifying drug busts was not just isolated to one unit. Justice Gustin Reichbach asked Anderson in court if he “observe[d] with some frequency this … practice which is taking someone who was seemingly not guilty of a crime and lying drugs on them?” To which Anderson replied, “Yes, multiple times”. “It was something I was seeing a lot of, whether it was from supervisors or undercovers and even investigators,” Anderson told the court. I find the fact that Anderson even witnessed supervisors engaging in “flaking” especially unsettling. It is statements like this that make many Americans distrust and dislike police officers even when it is unwarranted. When Justice Reichbach continued to press Anderson on if he ever considered the considerable harm he was doling out to innocent citizens, Anderson gave a startlingly callous reply. “It’s almost like you have no emotion with it, that they attach the bodies to it, they’re going to be out of jail tomorrow anyway; nothing is going to happen to them anyway,” Anderson said. While the NYPD has not responded to requests for comments on this issue, the city of New York paid out $300,000 in a settlement for a false arrest suit filed by Jose and Maximo Colon who were framed by Anderson and Tavarez. However, when one looks at all of the cases in which the city has settled false arrest suits caused by the NYPD planting drugs on innocent people, the total cost is in the neighborhood of $1.2 million . Sentencing for Arbeeny is scheduled for January and he faces up to four years in prison. Personally, I think this is far short of what is required to teach other police that this isn’t acceptable behavior. We must also realize that if the model of policing we currently use and the entire concept of a “war on drugs” continues as such, we will never see an end to this type of corruption. Note: I realize this is somewhat old news at the time of writing but I believe it is quite important regardless. This is the kind of information that needs to be brought up whenever possible.
Iranian media continues to be attacked by foreign entities
http://bit.ly/yLxnFA
By Madison Ruppert Editor of End the Lie A string of attacks on Iranian media continues with reports of jamming signals coming from an unknown location interrupting broadcasts for two hours. According to Iran's Press TV , broadcasts of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting's (IRIB) international channels on the Hotbird satellite provider were cut out for two hours by these signals. High-power jamming signals were transmitted on the 12437 MHz frequency from 9:00 to 11:00 GMT on Saturday, March 10, 2012. During this time, the broadcasts of the IRIB's international channels were interrupted on multiple occasions. The channels that were knocked out were Press TV, Iran's 24-hour English-language international channel along with Al-Alam, Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, Al-Kowsar, along with Sahar 1 and 2 channels. The jamming of IRIB signals is one of many recent attacks on Iranian media outlets. According to Press TV, British technicians operating out of Bahrain jammed IRIB channels, again on the Hotbird satellite, blocking provincial channels along with international stations like Press TV and others. Hackers out of the United States and Israel have also launched cyber attacks on Press TV's website, according to Press TV. While this report is not independently confirmed as far as I know, it is far from unreasonable to believe that such activities are taking place given the previous cyber attacks on Iran. The Stuxnet virus which targeted nuclear facilities in Iran has been linked to the United States and Israel , along with the related piece of malicious software known as Duqu . Press TV reports that the first such attack occurred on December 9, 2011, at which time American and Israeli hackers targeted the Press TV website. They report that this happened after Press TV aired footage of the American RQ-170 Sentinel stealth spy drone which had been captured by the Iranians after it illegally entered their airspace . More recently, the Press TV website was hit by another cyber attack on March 5, reportedly by the same hackers. Press TV reports that both of these attempted attacks were thwarted by security countermeasures taken by their technical team. It is unclear how they know exactly where the attacks originated from, or how they know it was the same hackers. Furthermore, I question how they knew that it was British individuals in Bahrain jamming their transmissions. Unfortunately they do not provide additional details on these matters so many of my questions on this matter are left unanswered. However, it seems reasonable to believe that the West would want to target Iranian media outlets since they are giving the alternative perspective which the United States does not want to get attention.
